‘My Fall Aesthetic’ is a series I’ve written over the years where I write about anything and everything that I’d like to include in my life this upcoming autumn. Read Part One here.
There are certain movies that give you such a delicious hit of childhood nostalgia that you can’t help but watch them summer after summer after summer. A long summer day isn’t complete with a viewing of The Great Outdoors (1988). A summer storm doesn’t feel the same if The Rescuers Down Under (1990) isn’t on. But most of all, summer simply isn’t summer without at least one night spent revisiting The Parent Trap (1998).
This summer, however, I found myself watching for different purposes other than just taking a nice stroll down Memory Lane: the clothing. With prep and western wear bubbling up more-so than it has in recent years, it’s hard to ignore the trademark looks from the movie. And while, sure, it’s set in the midst of summertime, most of what we’re seeing is perfect for that transitional period that is September.
What you’ll find below is 21 screenshots of iconic outfits from Lindsay Lohan, Natasha Richardson, Dennis Quaid, Elaine Hendrix, Lisa Ann Walter, and more.
We’re finally doing bandanas without fear.
Tied around the neck? Sure. Sticking casually (but not actually casually) outside of an exterior pocket of a $500 vintage L.L. Bean boat tote? Oh yeah. Tucked in our back pocket to look rugged even though we’re mainly using it to wipe Guinness foam off our face at happy hour? Sure, I guess.
Maybe it’s been my years-long battle with wanting to casually wear a bandana or maybe it’s because I just purchased this RRL Bandana Slider, but I’m sure ready to strap one on and see where it takes me. Somewhere in my phone lives a screenshot of an Aime Leon Dore employee with one perfectly folded and tied underneath the hood of his cashmere hoodie1, the same hoodie I bought in seasons past. Will I steal that look this fall when the temperature finally gets below 58 degrees? Undoubtedly.
Top shelf in the cotton crewneck.
If you haven’t already taken inventory of your crewneck collection going into September, consider this your warning. I’ve been testing some around the house before bedtime in hopes of really honing in on a vibe for fall.
For those moments when you don’t have a bandana handy to spice up your grocery store outfit, consider going top-shelf with the polo buttons like Annie James. Hell, I wouldn’t even be upset if you did wore a denim butt down underneath your crewneck sweatshirt, but more on that later.
A lot of us are probably trying to make use of the matching sweatsuits we’ve bought from COVID until now. What better way to spice things up than to mix in some classic pique to pop out the top?
(And yes, we do have some new Sunday Scaries crewnecks arriving in the first week of September so prepare yourself accordingly.)
