Sunday Read: Do You Have a Case of the ‘September Scaries’?
by Elizabeth Angell for The New York Times
After moving to Austin in 2015, I had a realization about seasons. It wasn’t just that seasons simply don’t really exist in Texas, but also that there isn’t the mental click that happens when the calendar changes from August to September. While living in Northern Michigan, you could simply feel when that shift from summer to fall happened without even having to look outside.
A few weeks ago, I was asked by Elizabeth Angell if I’d be willing to be interviewed for her piece on “September Scaries.” And while this may be self-centered, a dream of mine has always been to have my name in The New York Times (for positive reasons). After passing up an interview years ago for fear that I’d be painted in a negative light, my time finally came.
Here’s an excerpt:
August, perhaps more than any other month, is when we give ourselves permission to rest. Emails don’t need to be responded to as quickly; even texts to friends can be returned at a leisurely pace.
“There’s a lot of putting-off that happens in summer,” said Will deFries, whose popular Sunday Scaries Instagram account has been posting memes about that phenomenon since 2014. “There’s a lot of, ‘I’ll worry about that later.’” But by late August, later is very soon, and we can feel the pressures of a busy season bearing down. (Mr. deFries said his account sees an uptick in engagement around Labor Day weekend — a sign that the “scaries” are especially acute this time of year.)

Things I Saved This Week
Shop Now: New York In The Fall
The second we returned home from vacation, we were met with exactly what I wanted — a rainstorm and a dip in temperatures. While it certainly doesn’t feel like fall yet in Austin, I like to pretend it is by watching You’ve Got Mail (see above) and burning my favorite scent we’ve ever done with Vellabox. In fact, we liked it so much that we took it from a seasonal candle and made it year-round.
Actually, I should probably buy a few in case they sell out before it actually feels like fall down here.
Supplemental Reading
Earlier this week, I did a photo dump of sorts with the film I got from Italy. I couldn’t have been happier with how the photos turned out.
Since this week’s episode accidentally skewed “New York in the Fall”-themed, it’s a great time to remind you that we’re doing a Circling Back listener meet-up there at the end of October. Earlier this year, we did a charity auction for St. Jude Children’s Hospital where the top-donating city would get a meet-up. Luckily for all our You’ve Got Mail watchers out there, New York won. Hope to see you there!
My great aunt Jane was a music writer for The Cleveland Plain Dealer and I’ve spent a lot of time lately using various Google terms to read some of her old articles because I don’t have direct access to her archive. Earlier this week, I stumbled upon this piece where someone describes her sneaking backstage at a Grateful Dead show.
Earlier this week, my sister talked wool, ceramics, and secondhand clothing on her Substack.
