Sunday Read: Six Spas Where You Can Tune Out the World
by Adam H. Graham for The New York Times Style Magazine
Sometimes it feels like there are very few places left where you’re urged to do nothing. Where you have to tuck your phone away, drape yourself in a comfy robe, and actually slow down for a few moments. Whenever I enter a spa, I think to myself, “Enjoy this,” because that downtime is few and far between.
I often wonder when I became a “spa person” but I think it all goes back to my wedding when I spent far too much time in the spa in a last ditch effort to look good before the big day. The second we arrived at the hotel where we were getting married, you essentially had to peel me away from doing the “spa circuit” which consisted of the cold plunge, the hot tub, and the eucalyptus steam room.
These days, however, I often dream of what a “Sunday Scaries”-branded spa would have in it. While it sounds like an expensive pipe dream, it’s one avenue where my brain runs wild.
This week, I thought I’d include some recent inspiration that has made me want to travel far and wide to seek that intentional downtime. Here’s an excerpt:
A wellness-focused vacation has always felt like a salve for stressful times, and now the options are more varied and appealing than ever. These six properties — some recent openings, others with new or spruced-up spa facilities — offer treatments in serene settings, including a Sri Lankan cloud forest and the slopes of Mount Fuji. Their approaches range from science-backed programs — with results that can be biometrically tracked on Oura rings or smartwatches — to the more woo-woo, with, for example, healing crystal ceremonies.

Things I Saved This Week
My Sunday To-Do List
After spending the last three days playing golf, it’s time to take some stress off the body and rest the back.
Did someone say “club sandwich from the nearby deli” or am I hearing things?
I haven’t spun a record in a few weeks. If we can find some peaceful time later this afternoon, I may need to break the streak.
I’ve been reading “The Remains of the Day” by Kazuo Ishiguro. If I can get 30 pages behind me today, that will be a huge win.
