Sunday Read: Meet Hiking Shawty, The Most Well-Adjusted Person On Twitter
by Annabel Iwegbue for Cosmopolitan
I’m not sure if I require walks to increase my decision-making, but I do know that some of the biggest decisions I’ve made have been from taking long walks in cities or places I don’t live in.
When we went to Scotland in 2019, I had no idea about the laws they had around walking there. The Land Reform Act (2003) gives you the right to roam, and it takes all the worry out of where you should take your walk. Mainly because you can go pretty much, well, everywhere. Here’s an overview of what it says:
In 2003 the Scottish Government passed The Land Reform Act. This enshrined a set of long-held values which gave everyone the right to access the countryside around them. This means that for almost the whole of Scotland there are no trespassing laws, and everyone is welcome to respectfully walk, hike or stroll through privately owned land in the countryside.
Ever since that trip, I’ve craved those walks more than any others. The best way for me to go on them? By following an account I’ve enjoyed for a bit over a year now: @hikingshawty. She offers recaps of her daily walks and dinners, and it just might be the best account on the internet. Sometimes the combination of repetition and simplicity can be the most relaxing thing of all. Here’s an excerpt from this week’s read:
What do you think the main appeal of your posts is for people?
We live in a world where people are doing extreme things for views. So my account’s kind of a change of pace—because it’s just my average, like daily life. It’s about the simple things in life, which I think we’re learning to be grateful for. I think we’re all just so used to seeing negative things on Twitter, and people have such negative [experiences] on there because it’s all opinions and politics. It’s nice for people to get a break and see other things.
What do you hope people take away from your social media presence?
Just appreciate the small things in life, and where you come from. We all live in such beautiful places; you just have to find the beauty in where you live. I know I post from England, but all around the world, there are such, like, pretty places that nobody’s even heard of or seen. After every walk, I feel so cheerful. I’m quite an anxious person, and they really help me. When I’m walking, I feel so chilled out and just happy to be alive. So I hope they take away gratitude.

Things I Saved This Week
My Sunday To-Do List
Fold the laundry I started yesterday and spot clean a bunch of delicates. Not good.
Lions at Bengals, plus any Premier League I can sneak on the TV.
Finish watching SNL because I dozed off too many times while watching it last night.
Try to avoid the leftover pizza we have just sitting in the fridge looking delicious.
I desperately need to get back in the swing of my skincare routine. Organizing my bathroom counter may help dial things in.
Rest.
I hope your Sunday is one you look back on with fond memories,
Will
