Sunday Read › How Fashion Got Obsessed With Fly-Fishing
by Ashley Fetters Maloy for The Washington Post
I have a routine for when I’m completely and utterly hungover. This routine is reserved for once or twice a year — post-holiday party or post-wedding. I’ll hole up on the couch making sure I have no distractions and I’ll watch A River Runs Through It front to back. I don’t know why this is something I deploy but it makes me feel cozy. While I have only gone fly-fishing a handful of times, it’s a sport that I have an appreciation for after getting to know a lot of people who absolutely live and breathe the sport.
For this week’s Sunday Read, I wanted to honor Father’s Day with something adjacent to it. And on the list of activities that a lot of dads would like to do on Father’s Day, I think fly-fishing is right on up there.
If you’re a regular listener of Retail Therapy, you know we aren’t shy about fashion appropriating people’s hobbies or blue-collar careers — like when you see a ‘creative director’ at Yelp dressed like a mechanic. But when it comes to people including fly-fishing-inspired elements to their wardrobe, I very much approve.
Here’s an excerpt:
I wasn’t here on a fashion-reporting errand but instead to keep my husband company while he shopped. That night, Blue in Green was hosting a pop-up for the Japanese brand Creek Angler’s Device, a sort of if-you-know-you-know (and my husband knew) name in stylish fly-fishing-inspired gear. By the time we arrived, the selection of Creek wares had been aggressively picked over.
When we finally got to the register, my husband mentioned offhandedly that he’d be taking his new Creek-logo water thermometer with him to wade in a stream that weekend in a state park in Long Island. The cashier looked up in surprise. “Wait,” she said. “You actually know how to fly-fish?”

Now Available: Scenes of Note, Volume II
This past week, we released the second issue of Scenes of Note, an all-film zine featuring travel locations over the last year. When we embarked on the second edition, we wanted to make sure we weren’t just replicating what we did before. Adding more physical elements, more photos, and more pages, I’m so thrilled with how it turned out. This issue features Tennessee, West Texas, Mexico, California, and more. For all the location info (or to purchase one), check it out here:
