Sunday Read › A Wedding Gift Tradition That Keeps On Giving
by Chantel Tattoli for The New York Times
I specifically remember wanting to use a cow bowl for everything I ate (read: cereal and mac-and-cheese) while probably arguing with my sister over who got to use which mug for our hot chocolate. It’s the designs I saw when I’d finish the milk from my cereal. It’s the stacks of plates in the back of my dad’s store growing up. It’s the large brush strokes and hues of blue. I never really considered it until this week’s read popped onto my screen, but the look of Hadley pottery is one of life’s biggest nostalgias for me.
Here’s an excerpt.
Jill and Curt Cost were living in a Volkswagen bus on Maui when they wed in 1973, but Ms. Cost knew that she wanted blue-and-white dishware for the home they were planning to build. His mother found the perfect set at an estate sale on Oahu — all pieces from Hadley Pottery, a sought-after ceramics brand in Louisville, Ky. — and gave it to the Costs as a wedding present.
They became obsessed. Today, as the couple approaches their 52nd wedding anniversary, their daughter, Julia Cost, said the family home is “stuffed with Hadley.”

Sunday but not quite,

Relaxing Watch › How This Surfer Built His Dream Home on the Nova Scotia Coast
In the same vein that I find Architectural Digest’s Open Door home tour series, I’ve recently found that Huckberry’s “Homes” series scratches a similar itch. Seeing the thought process behind Dean Petty’s hand-built home, it truly made me wish I had the means to do something similar. Especially that room with the small fireplace overlooking the water.
