Sunday Read › The 25 Gardens You Must See
by Alexa Brazilian, Miranda Cooper, Clare Coulson, Clare Foster, Johanna Silver and Kendra Wilson for The New York Times Magazine
Well, I can’t stop thinking about my garden for numerous reasons. The prevailing reason is because it’s gotten so hot here lately that I fear everything will get absolutely fried. But more importantly, I think I’m finally starting to see my green thumb developing in front of my very eyes.
While I know very little about the practice, I do have a great resource: my dad. For my entire life, he’s been pretty obsessed with his garden (and the coffee table books of other gardens). Given the distance between us, it’s been nice to bond over the (admittedly simple) questions I call him with weekly about what I should be doing.
While I’m simply trying to keep my plants alive, it was still fun to draw inspiration from this week’s read. Here’s an excerpt:
A few gardens were disqualified for practical reasons: The owners of one eccentric, privately owned sculpture garden in Britain, for example, asked to be left off the list for fear of overcrowding. Others, like Claude Monet’s Giverny in France, were deemed too obvious or too packed with tourists to wholeheartedly recommend. Ultimately, while the jurists have all traveled extensively, visiting gardens around the world, none of them had seen, or even heard of, every nomination. In some instances, they had to defer to their fellow experts and take a leap of faith — something that, as gardeners, they’re well accustomed to doing.
