Sunday Read › David Hockney Just Keeps Painting
by Arthur Lubow for W Magazine
There are two specific coffee table books that I remember constantly paging through as a kid: The Complete Cartoons of The New Yorker and David Hockney: A Perspective. Both featured art that a child wasn’t used to seeing in a museum, and both probably went completely and utterly over my head in terms of a lot of their meanings.
If I’ve learned anything about nostalgia as I get further away from those days of paging through, it’s that I don’t think Hockney’s work will ever appear uninteresting to me. From his color to his composition to his subjects, there’s simply something about his work that just *feels* like a Sunday.
Here’s an excerpt:
Like his hero, Picasso, Hockney has managed to create a prodigious quantity of acclaimed art while maintaining a public persona that enjoys brand-name recognition. A celebrity since his mid-20s, he dyed his dark hair blond and wore oversize round eyeglasses, guilelessly crafting a look that distinguished him from the crowd. Shunning plain clothes, he opted for checks, tattersalls, plaids, and, especially, stripes. His socks were brightly colored and mismatched. A cigarette was never far from his lips.
