Sunday Read: Billy Strings Is Trying Very Hard To Be Good
by Grayson Haver Currin for GQ
There are a lot of reasons that I personally should fall in love with Billy Strings. He’s from Michigan. Check. He’s a generational bluegrass artist. Check. His live shows leave people wondering how he isn’t more popular. Check.
But in reality, there are a lot of other non-music or geographic reasons to love him. For example, just this past Friday, he got on a plane and skipped his own music festival when he heard his wife’s water broke. While you’d think some fans would be up in arms over this, most simply said something to the effect of, “That just shows what kind of character Billy has.”
I also love that he’s sober now. Well, “California Sober,” really, but that’s still okay with me given how he portrays his addiction issues in his interviews. His head seems to be on straighter than it ever has been before, and that’s evidenced by his recent GQ interview. Here’s an excerpt:
“I got a little devil on my shoulder that wants me to get drunk and do coke and call a bunch of hookers. He doesn’t think I deserve my success or happiness or my relationship with my wife,” he tells me as we squeeze into a corner of a downtown restaurant. He clutches Ally’s to-go order like a treasure. “He thinks I should be in a small trailer somewhere, sucking on a meth pipe without a dollar to my name, living in agony. Somewhere in there, I believe I’m a white-trash piece of shit that should be withering away.”
