Sunday Read: Exploring an Elite Winemaking Region at the Edge of the World
by Michael Clinton for Esquire
I know wine—or any alcohol for that matter—is the last thing you want to read about right now. Unfortunately for you, today is my first official day of a long-planned family vacation so a crisp white wine sounds pretty delightful right now.
While I still maintain my wine tasting chops are lackluster at best, I do still enjoy learning about wines enough to keep reading about wine. Whenever I think about wine from Australia, the first thing that pops into my head is a label with a kangaroo hopping across it which is completely and utterly unfair.
But if today’s read is any indication, Margaret River could emerge as an ample replacement.
“How often to you hear about, read about or taste Margaret River wines?” said Kramer. “Yet the wines, at their best, rank among the most distinctive, original-tasting and worthwhile of any on the planet.”
Add in the fine dining, surfing, hiking, mountain biking, walking trails, ancient caves and be prepared for the local bombardment of your sight, smell, taste, touch and hearing when you arrive to this remote part of the world.
On our way back to Perth to head to the Kimberley, the thought in my mind was that most people know Napa, Bordeaux, Tuscany, but few know Margaret River.
As Leslie, one of my fellow travelers said, “That is going to change. I think that Margaret River is ready for its global close-up.”

Things I Saved This Week
Supplemental Reading and Watching
This past week,
packed up and headed to Chicago for an event with Mugsy and a listener meet-up. You can watch here or you can see our disposables here. The Glastonbury Festival was right up my alley this year and I caught myself watching hours of footage. My favorite performances were from LCD Soundsystem, Bloc Party, and The Streets. Yes, I graduated from high school in 2005.
While I haven’t read it yet, I’ve officially added the Abercrombie re-brand piece from The Cut to my reading list.
