Welcome to The Sunday Digest — a free Sunday newsletter featuring long (and some short) reads, original columns, things I’ve saved over the last week, relaxing playlists, episodes releases, exclusive product drops, and more. Yes, you can reply to this email. I’d love to hear from you. Or, if podcasts are more your speed on Sundays, we’ve got that too.
Sunday Read: It's Sunday Afternoon and Here Come the Blahs (1991)
by Jon Nordheimer for The New York Times
This week, I thought I’d take us back to an piece I visit often. After learning the term “Sunday Scaries” in San Francisco in 2010, it stuck with me unlike any other phrase in my life (clearly). I’m not sure how long after, but my road of research eventually lead me to this week’s Sunday Read, an account of the Sunday Scaries (before the term existed) from a generation that isn’t mine.
And honestly, it’s beautiful. I love imagining Kathleen Kelly reading it in her picturesque You’ve Got Mail apartment. They even have a scan of the original article to boot (which I will be buying and framing at some point).
Here’s an excerpt:
Mary Aloe, a 29-year-old publicity agent in Los Angeles, gets it too. "People need to know they're not alone in this," she said. "I've mentioned to my friends what happens to me on Sundays and they say: 'Oh my gosh, is that what it is? I've got the same thing.' "
"Things might be going real well in life, and this empty feeling grips you, a form of depression or sadness or stress, and you can't shake it," she said. "I have no scientific evidence, but it seems more prevalent among women. I ask men if they experience it and they say, 'What are you talking about?'"
Highly organized personalities, like nature, abhor a vacuum, and such people may feel lost noodling around in unstructured expanses of time. Sunday may be the longest stretch of unscheduled time they encounter in a week.

Things I Saved This Week
Relaxing Watch: Teahupo'o August 2023
There are very few sports where the athlete has zero control over the terrain or playing field, and I believe that’s why I’ve always been drawn to the freedom of surfing. While I personally do not surf (yet have tried and failed), I like to imagine there’s a peace that can only be achieved when you’re on the wave of your dreams before you bail out. And after I got sucked into the above video earlier this week, perhaps you’ll agree.
Supplemental Reading
If you noticed, I missed last week’s Sunday Digest. I’ll be the first to admit that it’s largely because I took a last-minute mental health trip to Las Vegas to see Dead & Company at Sphere which was covered by both Variety and GQ this week. For the first time, I brought my film camera and posted some of the selects here.
This week on
, I put together a list of golf brands we discussed in an episode last month. You can see that list here.
