Welcome to The Sunday Digest — a free Sunday newsletter featuring long (and some short) reads, original columns, things I’ve saved over the last week, relaxing playlists, episodes releases, exclusive product drops, and more. Yes, you can reply to this email. I’d love to hear from you. Or, if podcasts are more your speed on Sundays, we’ve got that too.
The Sunday Haiku: This is my meditation until further notice.
A tortured poet,
some noise cancelling headphones,
and heavy eyelids.
New Episode › Retail Therapy 072: Kitten Heels at Balthazar
This week we dive into Coachella (its style, its celebs, its relevancy), review some recent spring purchases from Abercrombie & Fitch and Rowan, the unhinged Instagram of Balthazar owner Keith McNally, the most polarizing shoe trends of 2024 (via Back Row), dumbphones, the way Elordi carries double coffees, New Balance loafers, wishlist items, and more.
Listen to Retail Therapy on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube (see above), and anywhere else podcasts are found.
Relaxing Watch › Miles Davis Quintet Live in Karlsruhe, November 7th, 1967
I went through my first Miles Davis phase in high school. After reading his autobiography as a senior, I was pleased to see that the reading comprehension section of that year’s ACT was about none other than Miles himself. I think it was the only section I over-performed on. Actually, I know it was.
I went through my second Miles Davis phase when I moved to Austin. I was doing more writing and editing which meant I needed to listen to more music — especially music without any lyrics. Miles had been there for me before, and he was there for me again.
These days, I feel like I’m toeing the line of shifting into Miles 3.0 after watching a run of his live performances on YouTube. While my favorite recent watch has been Live Under The Sky ‘85, it doesn’t necessarily fall in the “relaxing watch” category given how out there they get.
Live in Karlsruhe, however, fits the bill.
