Sunday Read: Hotel Stationery Becomes the Canvas for Scenes From the Road
by Victoria Gomelsky for The New York Times
I used to travel with a journal that I’d never use. But in 2021, I began traveling with a journal that I now use about 50% of the time while on vacation — for brief entries, things about the trip I’d like to remember, pen drawings of the view from our room, nothing crazy.
Even if just for ten minutes, it allows me to sit down and be present in moments when I need to be present. After all, that’s the entire point of springing for a room with a view, right?
This week’s Sunday Read is about Michael McGregor, an artist who has made an absolute habit of making the most out of those notepads you see in nice hotel rooms — something I wish I had thought of first!
Here’s an excerpt:
What was it about the hotel stationery that appealed to you?
The first thing I noticed was the power of the typeface and how it immediately situates you. It gives a lot of context for your imagination to wander.
Oftentimes there is an allure or an essence in hotel stationery, like a lot of the Hawaiian ones are floral or they have a wave. In Vegas, they’re almost all gambling oriented. The really nice hotels have some sort of gold embossed lettering.
And it says a lot about the place. The second that you start to put images or words on it, it can completely shift. Or they can juxtapose with each other.

New Episode › Retail Therapy 071: Age Gaps & Lowercase Typing
This week we dive into the trending Aime Leon Dad who recreates Aime Leon Dore's lookbook images with his own clothing, we read through the viral article from The Cut about marrying a rich older man, and we discuss Will's emotions surrounding typing in lowercase. We also dive into some articles of interest — Kim K getting sued, a $500 ladcore jersey, and Gen Z being super into hallucinogens — before we do our wishlist items.

Relaxing Watch › Calypte: A Sailing and Surfing Voyage
Over the last week, I’ve spent my morning feedings with my son watching “Calypte,” one of the more relaxing YouTube documentaries I’ve seen in a long time. While I don’t have much of a reason why (especially because I don’t know how to surf), surf films and competitions have always been a nice way for me to relax. Perhaps it’s simply knowing that you’re not in control as much as the wave is.
Things I Saved This Week
Editor’s Note: I’m not kidding when I say I want to set up a studio that looks like the above for when The Sunday Scaries Podcast returns. Feedback welcome.
