Sunday Read › Meet the Legion of Fans Who Drift Off Every Night Watching ‘Frasier’
by Claire McNear for The Ringer
We all have our coping mechanisms. For me, it’s watching my favorite episodes of Frasier. And because I know I’ll be asked my favorite episodes at some point, here they are:
Season 5, Episode 14: The Ski Lodge
Season 6, Episode 8: The Seal Who Came To Dinner
Season 6, Episode 14: Three Valentines
Season 10, Episode 14: Daphne Does Dinner
Season 10, Episode 18: Roe To Perdition
I feel like every couple has a show that they collectively watch when winding down. For a lot of people, it’s The Office or Friends. At least, that’s what it was for my now-wife when we met. But after we began dating and spending more time together at night, she soon understood why I gravitated so much toward Frasier.
And it turns out we’re not alone. From this week’s read:
Early in his relationship with his wife, Ann, Alex Null had a system. When the two spent the night at his place, they’d curl up in bed and fall asleep to an old episode of The West Wing, a favorite of Null’s. When they ended up at Ann’s, however, things were different. She would boot up reruns of Frasier, which she’d fallen in love with in college.
Cut to the present, when the two share a home in Cleveland: Every night, without fail, it’s Frasier that they fall asleep to. “Since we’ve gotten married, I’ve accepted that it’s Frasier that we use to sleep,” says Null, an insurance defense attorney. “‘Happy wife, happy life’ and all that nonsense, I guess.”

Relaxing Watch: Branford Marsalis on The Grateful Dead
I was probably one of the only kids in my high school regularly listening to jazz. And I can almost guarantee I was one of the only non-band kids who was regularly listening to jazz as well. After my cousin and godfather introduced me to Miles Davis at an earlier age than most, I fell into a world that I still find myself in today.
As I drove home alone from the hospital the night our son was born earlier this month, a song I hadn’t heard in too long came on: “Bird Song” by The Grateful Dead at their 3/29/90 show featuring saxophonist Branford Marsalis. He was so good in his feature for the song that Jerry Garcia invited him to join them for the entire second set. Sometimes (for me, at least) hearing artists discuss their craft and experiences is just as relaxing as their final product itself (as shown above).
And in the wake of having my second child, his sax licks hit all the right notes for me as Jerry sang, “Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world” only a few songs later. See for yourself here.
