Sunday Read: Canvas of Clay
by Pete Kiehart for The New York Times
Soccer, cycling, tennis. Those are the three “Sunday sports” that come to mind when I’d like to have on some background noise while I clean up my place, drink some coffee, and organize myself. While Wimbledon is my ultimate for tennis, The French Open isn’t too far in the rearview mirror — mainly due to the uniquely beautiful courts that turn into canvases.
This week’s Sunday Read is less of a Sunday Read and more of a Sunday walk through an art gallery at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France.
Here’s an excerpt — but you definitely aren’t clicking through to the Times for the words in this case.
“When you step out on a newly made clay court that is clean, all the lines are perfect. It makes for a very pleasing visual experience,” Stefanos Tsitsipas said. “But there’s also a beauty when the courts are dirty and messed up and you can see all the footwork and effort that has been put in and you have a visual of that, of how much work has been put in in order for you to succeed in what you do.”

Alone with my thoughts,
“Siri, play Ipanema.”
