Welcome to The Sunday Digest — a free Sunday newsletter featuring long (and some short) reads, original columns, things I’ve saved over the last week, relaxing playlists, episodes releases, exclusive product drops, and more. Sunday Read: Rick Steves Says Hold On to Your Travel Dreams
by Rachel Syme for The New Yorker
During lockdown, I found myself doing several different things to occupy my time — FaceTiming with friends, actually using my Peloton every day, and watching Rick Steves travel videos on YouTube.
If you’ve unfamiliar with him, he’s pleasant in the same way The Great British Baking Show is pleasant. He’s uncontroversial, he’s positive, and he always seems to have a smile on his face no matter where his travels take him. Essentially, he’s the perfect person to latch yourself onto when you’re known as “The Sunday Scaries Guy.”
And even though this interview with him from The New Yorker is from 2021, I couldn’t help but dive in when I saw it on my Twitter feed earlier this week. Here’s an excerpt:
Let’s come back to this idea of “cultural chameleonism.” How do you suggest people achieve that abroad?
For a lot of people, their default is, “O.K., I want to drink, and my favorite drink is this Martini.” Well, you’ve got to get away from that when you’re travelling, O.K.? The question is not, Where can I get my drink? but, What do local people drink here? When I’m travelling, I physically change from country to country. When I’m in Greece, I go for a glass of ouzo. I never come home after a long day of work in Seattle and think, I’d like a nice cloudy glass of ouzo. That’s almost ridiculous. But when I’m in Greece, I don’t let a sunset go by without having a nice glass of ouzo.

Comforter, pillows,
Is the fitted sheet on right?
This is exhausting.
New Episode › Retail Therapy 033: The Spring 2023 In/Out Report
Well, we had a party. And at that party, we had everyone write down things that they thought were "in" and things that were "out." And on today's episode, we read from those cards and added our own items as well. We also discussed some male-centric fashion trends going into spring and added some stuff to our wishlists.
Editor’s Note: Because of the chaotic nature of today’s episode, doing a stand-alone listener digest for this episode was simply overwhelming. If you need any questions answered about the episode, drop a comment and we can talk it out. Additionally, no video this week as Producer Randy was out sick.
The Retail Therapy Night Luxe Cocktail Hour
This past Sunday, Barrett and I had the pleasure of hosting a cocktail party at Watertrade in Austin, Texas during SXSW. While I normally do my absolute best to avoid SXSW at all costs, there was some allure in doing an intimate get-together during an otherwise chaotic time. While we talked in depth about the party in the episode described above, here are some snapshots of it.
A special thank you to Alex Reichek for putting it together, Watertrade for hosting us, and Brynn Osborn for photography.
