Welcome to The Sunday Digest — a free Sunday newsletter featuring long (and some short) reads, original columns, things I’ve saved over the last week, relaxing playlists, episodes releases, exclusive product drops, and more. Yes, you can reply to this email. I’d love to hear from you. Or, if podcasts are more your speed on Sundays, we’ve got that too.
A note to end the year.
Thank you. Thank you for reading. Thank you for subscribing. Thank you for sharing.
Over the last few years, writing was something I put on the back burner. It was something I only did for personal reasons, or it was writing that went directly into The Sunday Scaries Podcast. Starting this newsletter has been a nice return to doing the type of content that got me into media in the first place.
Now more than ever, I’d love to hear your feedback. The things you want more of, the things you don’t care about, the things I haven’t even done yet that you crave. Comment below, or email me at will@sunday-scaries.com and I’ll do my best to get back to you in a timely fashion.
While I can’t make any guarantees about what 2023 holds for this newsletter, I can guarantee that it won’t be going away. It’s all the stuff I want to do on top of The Sunday Digest that becomes a bit overwhelming — the fiction series, the one-off columns, the photo albums, etc. But I’ll be in touch either way.
Talk soon,
Will
Sunday Read: Listening In at the Mark Hotel
by Adriane Quinlan for Curbed
When I first began writing, most of my work was purely observational. I’d sit somewhere, I’d look at everyone around me, and I’d selectively choose things that annoyed me in those scenarios. Whether you’re willing to admit it or not, we all love eavesdropping.
At coffee shops. Waiting in line at the post office. When the neighbors at your apartment are having it out. All of our natural inclinations go in one direction: “Wait, did I hear what I think I just heard?”
Which is why this week’s Sunday Read piqued my interest. Here are some conversations that went down at one particular Upper East Side hotel, from Curbed.
She’s on her way up.
So just wait for her on the seventh floor?
She’s on her way.
Oh Jesus. They’re gonna use us and break us and destroy us until there’s nothing left. That’s all they do.
Yes, we do, we have a fabulous hair salon. Frédéric Fekkai. I’m sorry, can you repeat that? For some reason your phone is going in and out. Absolutely, I’ll connect you now.
It’s good to have dreams. I want to wear a bikini again.
We’re almost exactly the same size. Wanna go up and try mine on?
Oh, and if you’re having trouble reading this because of a paywall, here’s how I got around it (on my iMac/not on my iPhone): Open an incognito browser and copy/paste the URL in there. Works most of the time on paywalled sites like Curbed and The New York Times. You didn’t hear that from me.
