Sunday Read: Breaking Up With Peloton
by Holly Burns for The New York Times
My routine during lockdown was fairly simple: wake up, drink a ton of early grey tea, shower, record Circling Back, get on my Peloton for 30-60 minutes, shower, and zen out for the rest of the day. It wasn’t much of a routine, but it was what kept me grounded during a time when I felt somewhat frazzled.
At my peak, I had a 60+ day streak of hard workouts. And in a turn no one saw coming, I got in the best shape I had been in since high school.
But then things started opening up.
And my Peloton started to collect dust.
And then my 60-day streak of activity turned into a 60-day streak of anything but.
With that being said, however, I will never say anything negative about my experience with my Peloton. It was simple, straight-forward, motivating, and (most of all) quick. Unfortunately, now that the pandemic dust has (somewhat) settled, some are realizing that their love affair is officially over.
An excerpt from this week’s Sunday Read—
During the first two years of the pandemic, Kristi Falzon, who lives in Chicago, used her Peloton every day. “It was a godsend,” she said. She could exercise in her spare bedroom between Zoom meetings without worrying about other people’s germs.
But lately the spark has gone out. Last month, Ms. Falzon, 39, listed the stationary bike on Facebook Marketplace. She paid $2,650 for her Peloton and accessories, but after a month of waiting for buyers, she begrudgingly sold it for $1,100.
“I wanted to sell it before everybody else did,” she said. “The more we get back to civilization, the more people will start selling them.”
