Retail Therapy 009: Spray Tans & Mesh Shirts
Plus some fly fishing appropriation and wishlist items.
Listen to today’s Retail Therapy on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube (see above), and anywhere else podcasts are found.
Over here on Retail Therapy, we’ve already been thrusted into summer temperatures which means we had no choice but to talk see-through shirts and spray tans.
As you know, I’ve been overthinking my mesh polo shirt for the last few weeks despite Barrett coaching me behind the scenes. And finally, we had to bring the conversation to the podcast.
Mesh and Lace Shirts
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been gun-shy when I buy something out of my comfort zone. Whether it was my first XS muscle-fit Abercrombie t-shirt that barely fit my 124-pound high school frame or an overpriced lace shirt in 2023, anything outside of a t-shirt and chinos is usually considered “outside the box” for me.
Considering how popular these styles have become this season, however, I knew I had no choice but to lean into the trend and pray for the best.
Truthfully, my fears were essentially this:
But instead, I was fairly happy to report back that I think it worked?
Would I have been able to do it without the lace-inspired confidence oozing from Barrett at some recent nuptials we attended? That’s to be determined.
Spray Tan Summer
At those aforementioned nuptials, Barrett showed up absolutely glowing. And after about ten people complimented him on how good he looked, I eventually remembered, “Oh yeah, he got a spray tan.”
As a spray tan greenhorn myself, it’s never been something I had entertained until this summer. Perhaps it’s the fact that I don’t have as much time to get outside as I did before being a father, or maybe it’s just that our skin isn’t tanning like it did when we were in middle school on spring break.
On today’s episode, I hammered Barrett with questions about all things spray tan — the pricing, the process, the aftermath. If you don’t leave this episode at least considering getting one, well, you’re stronger than I am.
Fly Fishing Appropriation
I should get ahead of this before I go too deep — no, I do not consider myself to be an angler in any sense of the word. My three (3) treks out don’t constitute giving me the title, and my skillset only reiterates that point.
As Barrett noted today, classic outdoorsy collaborations aren’t something new. But when it comes to the recent release from Aime Leon Dore and Woolrich, well, something was a bit off.
Is it actually a good collaboration because they took the extra step to make it feel more authentic? Probably not. Will people get called posers if they show up to day-drink in the $425 Mesh Utility Vest pictured above? I hope so.
As always, we closed things out with our wishlists.
Apologies for any broken links below — a lot of these products are now from older seasons or have since sold out, so our link situation will remain in flux.
