37 People On What They're Most Excited To Wear This Fall
"My grandfather’s canvas collared dove hunting coat."
You get it. Once the calendar flips over to September, we all begin thinking about it. And once our emails start getting absolutely hammered with promotional emails about sweaters and denim, well, we have no choice but to begin fantasizing.
Yep — it’s time to start dressing for fall (or “Oatmeal Season” as its known in the Sunday Scaries universe).
We’ve obviously been more-than-excited to talk fall fashion given the last two episodes of Retail Therapy, so I thought it would be soothing to read what listeners are looking forward to wearing this fall.
Below are original responses from Sunday Scaries followers and Retail Therapy listeners. I hope you enjoy combing through them as much as I did.
Oh! But here — I’ll do my response first.
Will, 36
I’m most excited to wear my larger-fitting pants without the fit anxiety I had about them last year. I’m also excited the loafers/chunky socks look is taking off because I’m looking for any and all excuses to wear my nice loafers more than I currently do. But other than that, I’ll be wearing some cashmere sweaters I’ve purchased over the last few years in lieu of buying any new sweaters. Don’t hold me to that.
Fritz, 33
I’m glad that classic prep is coming back. Rugby shirts, classic fit pants (especially corduroys), comfy fit quarter zips, blazers that aren’t slim fit. The works.
Sarah, 28
Ballet flats! I already bought 2 pairs. They make my inner child sing
Nick, 28
Jackets, typically leather but really any kind. I’ll usually buy a new piece from Allsaints for the fall, I’ve been eyeing either a suede bomber or a leather with the vamp collar.
Gary, 29
I am excited to wear a pair of dark wash fancy jeans with my red wing chukka boots and a knit sweater or flannel.
Andrea, 53
My cognac colored, suede, Sherpa Boston clogs. I’m eager to make them an integral part of my fall wardrobe as I didn’t wear them a lot last year!
Casey, 25
Excited about my current hunt for the perfect coat. In Prague for three weeks this season and I’m willing to toss down big girl bucks for the perfect coat. Also: some tall black boots. I have a pair of Chelseas right now but I’m looking for taller ones to pair better with tights + short skirt. Planning on lots of layering with thin mock neck long sleeve tops, too. The tricky part is hats — need advice for a warm hat that looks good in Europe. Beanies won’t do the job.
Shelby, 30
Really looking forward to breaking out my Bitter Southerner corduroy baseball cap and J.Crew men’s section rugbies
Maureen, 34
Investing in some nice leather riding boots and a classic Barbour quilted coat. Also looking forward to my clogs and various-shades-of-oatmeal sweaters. But let’s be serious - I live in Austin so these are barely making their way out of their Nordstrom packages sadly.
Amanda, 34
I am looking forward to wearing my hoodie, long coat combo! The coat elevates the hoodie almost. Brings a low key look together by just throwing a long sleek coat on. I feel so chic with a nice pair of jeans/leggings with a cute boot! I cannot wait.
Aryana, 27
Fall is also my favorite season of the year on both the food and clothing front! I’m excited to finally bust out the new (5th pair) of Doc Martins I bought impulsively this summer and haven’t had a chance to wear yet. I’m also excited for some flannel tunics, beanies and scarves. Sadly, I live in California so we don’t get much of a “fall”, but I’ll wear these nonetheless. Literally counting down the days.
Kendra, 31
My fifteen year old, perfectly broken in, Frye harness boots. The square toe, the beloved brown leather, the weight and stomp of the heel, paired with dark denim and a sweater for the morning over a light shirt for the afternoon. Timeless.
Chloe, 27
Warm, comfy, neutral sweaters. I tried very hard to be colorful this summer and now I’m tired of putting in the effort. Also tired of right clothing outlining every imperfection.
Daniel, 32
Fall is the best time of year and the best time to dress. I am most excited to buy a pair of big, voluminous pants. I love the feel of a heavy sweater or overcoat up top, and it’s time to give that same level of comfort to the legs. Summer required minimal coverage of shorts anytime I stepped outside for more than five minutes. But soon I can wrap myself in thick, comfortable, flowing fabric and look great doing it. It’s big pant fall y’all (would love some suggestions if you have any. Thinking of going Manresa or 18 East).
Lauren, 27
My cherry red Blundstone boots. They are my comfort autumn/winter item, I wear just about everyday. They’re a perfect cross of comfort, reliability, and low-key scuffed-up beauty. My wardrobe is very monochromatic, lots of black, and the cherry red is just enough of a pop to complete my look. Looking forward to trading the Birks for the Blunds ;)
Lee, 33
My Barbour jacket and knits (country of origin sweater, muji kimono sweater I picked up in Kyoto, more I’m sure). It’s all about comfort and quality.
Brianna, 30
Excited to buy a new every day cross body bag. Have been eyeing brands like Demellier, Polene, strathberry, Mansur Gravriel to value quality, craftsmanship etc over brand (almost got a YSL Cassandra but just couldn’t pull trig). But going to try and get a custom made bag in Florence (humble brag s/o luxe &nyx for our trip)
Cherry. Cherry red as a color, cherries on things. Cherry will be my transitional Barbie pink. Likely as accessories more than main pieces but who knows.
Little late but will probably join Boston Birk club.Sorry, one more: a watch and charm necklace. Watch ala Cartier tank or panthere (but not because I’m not that rich). Charm necklace I’m not sure where to find a pic for this but I have a few visions in my head.
Harris, 30
My grandfather’s canvas collared dove hunting coats (Ducks Unlimited and Woolrich).
Alex, 31
There’s nothing better than that first fall day with enough summer left in it that you can get away with shorts, but is crisp enough to warrant an oversized crew neck and my favorite corduroy brewery hat.
Marissa, 29
Denim, trench coats, any oversized shirt or sweater, sneakers, loafers. All of the gold jewelry. Also really anything from reformation.
Ryan, 28
I’m most excited to wear crew neck, wool, fisherman style sweaters. I have been getting targeted ads for a company called Long Wharf for a cream colored sweater made of old oyster shells
Elizabeth, 25
My army green oversized puffer vest that’s reversible shearling on one side and the army green faux leather on the other.
Austin, 27
Green fatigue pants, quarter length socks, Kirkland white tshirts (GOAT price for quality) under cardigans. German army trainers (not necessarily Margiela), and a gorpy sneaker like the hoka kaha low in a natural color way like brown or beige.
Leandra, 25
My grey, unlined Vince coat. Feels like a hug while I try to channel my rich soccer mom vibes.
Amy, 25
Cashmere sweaters - all kinds. My white + Warren striped one and my American Vintage big red one. They are both extremely comfortable yet fun and chic. Also, blazers and my cozy winter coats. Blazers bc they make any outfit give girl boss, and coats because I also feel like a girl boss when I wear them. On the hunt for a good pair of BOOTS!
Marc, 28
I’m excited to break out my Barbour waxed cotton coat (the Ashby to be specific). It classes up my mostly casual work from home wardrobe and makes me look and feel like an actual adult when I’m out and about. If I want to go full Northeast basic fall fit I’ll pair it with bean boots which I do with embarrassing frequency. I also like to pair it with a canvas Yankees Carhartt ball cap covered in the perfect amount of saw dust from woodworking hobby projects to give me an air of legitimacy that I frankly don’t deserve but will gladly accept. I’m getting excited just writing this!
Ian, 32
I’m excited to wear my patched/repaired Barbour. The first Michigan fall Barbour always feels particularly special. When it’s paired with some corduroy pants and a tweed sport coat—essentially just cosplaying Dead Poet’s Society—it’s *chef’s kiss*.
Chelsea, 30
I’m seeing lots of clogs, trousers, and quilted jackets and I’m here for it all. The ethically produced and affordable as hell 100% leather and cashmere items from Quince. The entire fall edit from Everlane. And a couple more shackets because they aren’t dead yet.
Jessica, 35
Birkenstock clogs. Cashmere crew necks. Gucci loafers. Max Mara camel coat.
Katherine, 25
Got a Burberry coat for Christmas last year but obviously the vibes are sooo October/November, so i’m very excited to give her the treatment she deserves.
Hilary, 38
J.Crew has been on fire since Olympia Gayot took over design duties. It has been a dream of mine to buy a three piece pinstripe suit, with matching vest. I love the old school vibe it gives, a la Katherine Hepburn or Marlene Dietrich. J. Crew has one in their fall line and I’m thrilled!
Libby, 33
I’m on the hunt for a pair of black loafers a la Taylor Swift being photographed hanging with her girl gang in NYC this summer. I’m pretty sure those were Gucci, which are outside my budget, but I found a pair of G.H.Bass Weejuns that I’m thiiiiis close to committing to.
Ally, 23
I am most excited to whip out my collection of sweaters from my wardrobe. I have (almost) every color of sweater and (yes) they are color coordinated! It’s a sad feeling opening my closet door to see them all staring back at me, and knowing that they could be paired with any outfit if it weren’t for the heat. I also have an oversized tan suede jacket - with gold buttons that snap - I picked up last fall at a thrift store. It’s definitely my favorite piece in my wardrobe and I’m excited to pull it out!
Darci, 31
I really want to wear something leather. A leather jacket, maybe a leather skirt. This is a little irrational because I live in Florida and “fall” isn’t for several months, but I want to travel somewhere and wear this in the true fall. I’m going to Italy on my honeymoon soon and it seems like the perfect time to buy an amazing leather staple item and wear it when I get back. It just feels necessary.
Cam, 28
Chunky cardigans over a collegiate tee tucked into some drawstring dock pants with camp mocs (EasyMoc). Adding socks to the Birkenstock Bostons. Marled crewneck sweaters over a denim button down with chino shorts.
Lea, 25
A sweater my 93 year old grandma handed down to me - it’s the coziest thing I own now. sorry don’t have a link!
Kendall, 29
Birkenstock Bostons. “Potato shoes” were all the rage as a 6th grader and now that they’ve made their way back around in the year of our lord 2023, my millennial ass is shucking big girl bucks out to buy the real deal instead of the Walmart knock offs. Is it 110 degrees in Texas? Yes. Will I still wear them and mentally pretend I’m on an apple picking excursion in layered clothing? Also yes.
Kristen, 33
An oatmeal mock-neck cashmere sweater I copped last year-so comfy but makes me look like I have it together.
Well that was refreshing, wasn’t it?
If you enjoyed all this fall fashion dialogue, don’t hesitate to dive into our recent Retail Therapy episodes where we break down both men’s and women’s trends going into the fall season.
See you out a local brewery this fall where we’ll all be absolutely flourishing in our layers and Birkenstocks. Happy dressing.
